Press Release

Vaccine Against Shingles Should Not Be Used In Conjuction with Antiviral Medication

Vaccine against the herpes zoster virus should not be used in conjunction with acyclovir (or Zovirax).

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) has just learned that according to Dr. Donohue in a question and answer session on, the vaccine against the herpes zoster virus should not be used in conjunction with acyclovir (or Zovirax).

The CBCD is in agreement with this assessment. This is because valacyclovir (Valtrex) and its two close relatives, famciclovir (Famvir) and Acyclovir (Zovirax) help control recurring outbreaks of genital herpes, a different virus from the chickenpox virus of shingles. However, these same drugs can also suppress or kill the chickenpox virus.

Since they have that effect, they could kill the virus in the shingles vaccine and make it useless in its protection against a shingles outbreak.

Thus, those who wish to prevent a shingles outbreak should not use acyclovir, famciclovir, or acyclovir if they have had the Zostavax vaccine against the herpes zoster virus.

Dr. Donohue noted however, that if you stop using acyclovir for about a week, it may be safe to get the Zostavax vaccine. You should discuss this with your doctor.

What is herpes zoster or “shingles”?

The herpes zoster virus can cause an extremely uncomfortable rash of blisters that typically shows up as a “band” along one side of the body’s torso.

The virus normally attacks older people and those who have lowered immune systems.

Are there any remedies against herpes zoster? Yes there are. As noted above, there is at least one vaccine developed to help prevent herpes zoster attacks. That vaccine is called Zostavax.

Herpes Zoster (also known as “Shingles” and “VZV”) is a chronic herpes infection that stays with an individual for life. This malady occurs only in people who have had chickenpox, and although it can occur at any age, the majority of sufferers are more than 50 years old.

The CBCD believes one of the best means of helping to prevent a herpes zoster attack is by preserving a strong immune system.
